“10 Practical Tips for Fighting Executive Burnout”

Do you remember when you used to feel vital and full of energy as a child? When you woke up in the morning and were ready to jump out of bed with enthusiasm and excitement about the day ahead? You were excited about being here and everything was sparkling with life. You looked forward to the opportunity to be alive and felt connected to a resource which enlivened and empowered you.

All of us are born with a natural energy which fueled our bodies, emotions, and minds. Over time we become deplete, incrementally unconscious and eventually burned out from poor lifestyle practices, toxic environments, negative thoughts, and overdoing ourselves repeatedly. Many people believe that this lack of energy is simply a result of the aging process, however I am here to tell you that is far from the truth. We are meant to have vital energy and feel good throughout our lives. So, how do we reconnect to this child like Energy and achieve peak levels of performance in our business and personal lives? Here are a few practical tools you can apply immediately to get started in improving your Energy, productivity levels and be healthier on multiple levels:

1. Just say no. While you are recovering from burnout, take time for yourself, complete your current projects and avoid taking on new commitments for a designated period of time. Don’t fall for the trick of having to take on more to accomplish more. Completing the tasks at hand before you and taking time for yourself will pay off in the long run.

2. Delegate as many things as possible. Make maximum use of your staff and/or team. Most leaders try to do everything themselves because they are highly driven and most likely did everything for themselves early in their lives. Creating win win dynamics with your team, co-workers or employees allows you to be more productive in your accomplishments. Even if the person doing them doesn’t do them as well as yourself.

3. Take breaks between projects. Give your mind and body a chance to recover between projects and you will find yourself much more effective when taking action once again.

4. Control your devices. Reduce technology time. Spending loads of time on our phones, computers and other devices has been proven to be a huge source of energy drain. Start by turning off all devices an hour before bed time. If you have withdrawals, replace with another positive activity like reading or meditation.

5. Take an inventory of your top 10 biggest stressors. Make a list of the top stressors in your life which leave you feeling hopeless, run down, anxious or worried. Writing them down allows you to have a more objective perspective and come up with possible solutions.

6. Take each item on your inventory list and write down at least one item to reduce stress related to it. Take action on each item consistently and over time you will be begin to see improvement. Don’t get frustrated if you don’t see immediate results. Consistency is key here.

7. Keep work at work. Resist the urge to bring work home. We are biologically created to need down time in our lives. Leaving work at work will allow you to unwind at home and perform better at work. Create healthy parameters for your business and personal time and space.

8. Reinforce effort, not outcome. The more you acknowledge your successes and the progress you make, the more productivity you will have.

9. Socialize outside your professional group. Having friends and connections outside your work allows you to have fresh perspectives, ideas and new resources.

10. Consider joining a professional or personal support group; Having a support group serves two purposes. One, it allows an avenue to for you to express your thoughts and current circumstances and two, it prevents isolation, a common consequence of burnout.
